Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
